China’s regulators approved Bunge’s acquisition of Viterra for USD 34 billion. The merger creates a USD 8.2 billion giant. The acquisition was first announced in 2023. It now creates a global grain specialist in the ranks of ADM and Cargill. The EU and Canada already approved the purchase.

The final approval comes with certain terms, as China sees it could hinder competition in its imported soybean, barley, and rapeseed markets. Bunge and Viterra committed to five obligations, Reuters reports. They will have to report quarterly their sales volumes to Chinese customers, for instance.

They must also maintain a “timely, stable, reliable, and sufficient” supply of soybeans, rapeseed, and other agricultural products, “making every effort to uphold this during global crop shortages, Reuters quotes the ruling.
