Cuba cuts daily bread ration due to ingredient shortage
24. September 2024
Cuba’s government moved to lower the weight of its subsidized ration of bread allotted per day by a quarter, Reuters reported. The bread was shrunk from 80 g to 60 g, along with a slight price reduction, to just under 1 peso (1 Cuban peso is equivalent to EUR 0.037). Bread is one of the few subsidized basic foodstuffs in the country.
Around 36% of the Cuban population had a monthly income lower than USD 104 in 2023, and only 18% had an income higher than USD 417 (Statista).
At the beginning of September, Cuba ran short of wheat flour for bread production. The government blames the U.S. trade embargo for this shortage, Reuters adds.
