The price of bread is now EUR 1.20 in Greece, with further increases expected, due to higher production costs, stemming from an increase in the price of flour and energy. In 2020, bread cost EUR 0.80 a piece. Some bakeries are already going ahead with a price bump for breads, according to local media reports. Bread is expected to reach EUR 1.40.

Bread flour currently costs around EUR 0.48 – 0.49 per kg, and flour mills announced the prices will go up to EUR 0.52 – 0.54 /kg.

“Unfortunately, after a very long time, energy has gone up by over 120%. From where we used to pay EUR  0.08 per kilowatt-hour, now we pay EUR 0.19. Flour has become more expensive, as well as other raw materials – butter, oil, and sesame. Prices will inevitably increase,” the president of the Athens Bakers’ Guild, Panagiotis Sachinidis, told ertnews.

In Greece, bread consumption has been on the decline in the past years. Approximately 800 bakeries closed in the country since 2022, due to soaring energy costs, Npress.gr reports.
