Graz-based family business Martin Auer opened its first location outside of its home market of Austria, named ‘Rye by Martin Auer’, in Manhattan. The company’s popular rye recipe was customized for the New York opening in collaboration with a master baker from Graz, who is also training the staff in the US facility.

The oven and the baker are the main focus of the store, while a ‘bread wall’ displays 27 rye loaves. “We never wanted to simply open another bakery in New York,” says Martin Auer. There is already a wide variety of baguettes, croissants, wheat breads, and coffee available there. “That’s why we are focusing on what we do exceptionally well: our 100% organic rye sourdough bread.”

Martin Auer currently operates 42 branches in Austria, primarily in Graz and the surrounding area. The company employs around 800 people and generates annual revenue of approximately EUR 48 million.
