In 2026, rye bread takes center stage: Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Alois Rainer and Roland Ermer, President of the Central Association of the German Bakery Trade, presented the Bread of the Year at the Green Week event.

“Rye is Germany’s traditional bread grain, playing an important role in our diet. Rye is more drought-resistant than wheat and thus contributes to the resilience of agriculture. It is therefore all the more important to bring rye bread more into the focus of consumers,” said Roland Ermer at the official bread-cutting ceremony at the trade fair.

Federal Minister Alois Rainer commented: “Delicious bread from the baker on the corner – for many people in Germany, that’s the taste of home. Rye bread is part of this tradition. I am committed to preserving these traditions: bread in all its variations is simply an essential part of a balanced diet; bakeries, especially in rural areas, are important suppliers and meeting places for the local community.”
