In response to political pressure, Nestlé said it was not making a profit in Russia, and announced it was suspending all sales of non-essential brands such as KitKat and Nesquik, among others. Non-essential imports and exports into and out of Russia had already been stopped, alongside all advertising. The company also suspended all capital investment in the country.

Essential food will continue to be provided, such as infant food and medical/hospital nutrition. “This approach is in line with our purpose and values. It upholds the principle of ensuring the basic right to food,” the company said in a statement.

“While we do not expect to make a profit in the country or pay any related taxes for the foreseeable future in Russia, any profit will be donated to humanitarian relief organizations,” the statement added. The company has contributed food supplies and financial aid for the people in Ukraine and refugees in neighboring countries. “And these efforts will continue,’ Nestlé says, expressing support for the people of Ukraine and its 5,800 employees there.
