Finland-based Carccu® released grease-proof paper without PFAS or other fluorochemicals, to meet sustainability requirements and upcoming food safety standards. Its grease-proof paper is designed to provide a barrier against grease and moisture, making it an ideal choice for food packaging. It undergoes a manufacturing process that significantly reduces its porosity. It is made by refining the paper pulp through a process known as supercalendering, which involves passing the paper through a series of heavy rollers. This process compresses the fibers tightly together, creating a dense and non-porous surface. As a result, greaseproof paper is resistant to grease and moisture, making it suitable for a variety of food packaging applications. The company explains that this modification gives it a smooth surface that effectively resists oil and grease. Grease-proof paper is characterized by its translucent appearance and texture.
This packaging paper is designed to be safe for direct food contact, meeting stringent food safety regulations. It is free from harmful chemicals and additives. Its properties make it suitable for wrapping baked goods: “Grease-proof paper is commonly used in the packaging of baked goods, such as pastries, cakes, and cookies. Its non-stick surface ensures that baked items do not adhere to the paper, preserving their appearance and texture. The moisture resistance of grease-proof paper also helps keep baked goods fresh by preventing them from becoming soggy or stale,” Carccu explains.
It is made from renewable resources, fully biodegradable and compostable, making it an eco-friendly option for food packaging.
