While it recognizes the objectives of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the value of supporting sustainable and deforestation-free supply chains, Fedima asks the EU Commission to “swiftly postpone” EUDR implementation to give companies time to establish a feasible implementation process.

Fedima is actively preparing for the implementation of the EUDR with its member companies and national associations across their supply chains. Fedima invites the European Parliament to consider the challenges raised by EU Member States, third Countries, and industry stakeholders, and urges for a swift approval of the Commission’s proposal for a postponement, while refraining from introducing any further amendments to the EUDR during this process, to end the current legal uncertainty.

“It is essential that the implementation of the Regulation is done following a process that is feasible and does not generate unnecessary burdens on the industry considering that significant investments have already been made by our members in anticipation of compliance with the EUDR.

Therefore, Fedima acknowledges the European Commission’s decision to propose a Regulation amending the EUDR as regards the date of application, which will provide the necessary time for companies, producing countries, and national authorities to prepare for implementation,” Fedima wrote in an announcement.

The baking ingredient manufacturer association also welcomes the release of the Guidelines and updated FAQ, which aim to facilitate the transition towards EUDR-compliant value chains. However, it underlines, “Is crucial that the European Commission continues to support the industry throughout the coming months,” expressing its view that implementation efforts must continue, including further guidance and tools next year.

Fedima members remain committed to ensuring compliance with the EUDR’s requirements when they come into effect.
