The UK introduced new legislation (November 14) that requires millers and flour producers to fortify non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid from the end of 2026.
Corbion is working with manufacturers of corn tortillas to fortify their products with folic acid. At first available for enriched grains, new solutions now also include corn tortillas, to help lower birth defect risks such as spina bifida in infants.
The flour used in the UK will have mandatory folic acid fortification to help prevent spinal birth defects in newborns, the government announced. The new rules will only apply to non-wholemeal wheat flour, with gluten-free foods and wholemeal flour exempt.
