Lila Bäcker is selling freshly baked products that are left by the end of the day on the ‘Too Good to Go” app, at a heavily discounted price. People can reserve a surprise bag worth EUR 12 for the price of EUR 4 and pick it up from one of Lila Bäcker’s 230 branches half an hour before closing. The bakery started this initiative to help minimize food waste.
“Fresh bread, rolls and baked goods should not be wasted. Previously, unsold products went to the food bank for those in need, to a manufacturer of animal feed, or for returns. From now on, we are offering them via the new app at a very reasonable price before the store closes. Customers save around EUR 8 per bag. In the test phase, we were already able to sell over 50,000 surprise bags. In this way, we avoid throwing away food and operate even more sustainably. That’s why we are expanding our cooperation with ‘Too Good To Go’,” explained Viola Kaluza, CEO of Unser Heimatbäcker Holding GmbH.
The ‘Too Good To Go’ app offers users a digital marketplace to save food from local stores from being wasted. Customers can register for free via the app, reserve a surprise bag and pick it up at the Lila Bäcker branch of their choice. Payments are done via the app.
With over 50,000 bags sold in the test phase alone, around 118,000 kilograms of CO2e have already been saved, the equivalent of 4.5 million smartphone charges, or 116 plane tickets from Berlin to London, the bakery illustrates.
